Orange Galaxy S4 Specifications

The Samsung Galaxy S4 LTE (previously nicknamed Project J or Altius) has arrived, and it's officially the most powerful smartphone in the world! Here at Store Orange we take a look at what's under the hood of Samsung's new flagship device and bring you all the latest updates, information and availability details for the new Galaxy S4.

The Orange S4 is lighter and slimmer than the S3, at 130g and 7.9mm respectively, and it's also got a slimmer bezel. The battery stands at a decent 2600mAh, every bit of which will be needed for a device with this much power.

But with the overall design remaining very similar to the S3 - including the same polycarbonate casing with removable back cover - the focus is very much on software and hardware improvements.

The S IV runs on the latest Android JellyBean 4.2.2 OS, and they've super-sized the full-HD Super AMOLED screen to a ginormous 4.99", with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. This means the device will have an incredible pixel per inch count of 441. In layman's terms? Pixels will be sharper to the human eye, resulting in an incredibly sharp display - it is, to date, the highest resolution screen we've ever seen in the UK.

Processor

As for what’s under the hood, that depends on the region. The international version of the S4 packs Samsung's very own massive octo-core 1.6GHz Exynos 5410 Octa processor (four A15 cores for power, and four Cortex-A7 cores for power efficiency) with an ARM-powered PowerVR SGX 544MP GPU. The US and UK versions will back an also impressive quad-core 1.9GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 processor. Both versions will come with 2GB RAM. This thing is built to fly.

In terms of features, the Orange Galaxy S4 features Qi wireless charging capability and an IR blaster, meaning you can use it as a remote control for your TV and other appliances. There's also Samsung's new Knox Security software on board, allowing you to separate your device into business and personal sections - so it's almost like having two phones in one. But that's the tip of the iceberg - there's a host of other remarkable software improvements designed to make a massive, innovative splash in the crowded smartphone market.

Hands-Free Controls

Earlier this year Samsung submitted trademark applications for something they termed Eye Scroll and Samsung Eye Scroll technology. All speculation pointed to some form of this being integrated into the S4, and it's proven correct.

Face detection technology has existed for a while, but Samsung have improved upon it with motion-sensitive controls that allow users to pause video and scroll through pages using eye movements alone.

Smart Pause pauses the video you're watching if it senses that you're not looking at the screen, while Smart Scroll scrolls through content when you tilt the phone while looking at it.

Smart Alert has been upgraded with Air Gestures, allowing you to swipe the phone and flick through content without touching the screen. You can also answer calls without touching the screen, courtesy of Air Call Accept.

But it's not all about hands-free motion control. Samsung have included a Health and Wellness package as part of the improved TouchWiz interface. The S Health app can, provided you have the additional accessories, measure calories, blood pressure, and even the temperature and humidity of your immediate environment to optimise your wellbeing and exercise.

Camera

A 13 megapixel camera, a considerable increase from the 8 megapixel camera found in the S3, is also on board. 13MP is a lot, but other flagship devices like the HTC One are being launched with a similarly impressive amount of megapixels, which is why Samsung are going one step further and including Sound and Shot technology, which captures nine-second films with sound and Drama Shot, which combines several shots taken within milliseconds of each other and combines them into just one image.

Other nifty features include Cinema Photo through which you can shoot a video clip and then select which parts to animate and which to keep static, and produces a GIF image to send to all your friends as a final result.

In conjunction with the 2MP, 1080p front-facing camera, you're also able to snap a picture using both front and back lenses and combine the images automatically into one shot. So if you're taking a pic of your friends but want to be in it too, both cameras will take a picture simultaneously and the result will be one image. Similarly, you can choose to erase objects from a picture and record video simultaneously from the front and back camera (1080p).

Orange Samsung S4: 4G Connectivity

We can confidently report that the S IV is coming to you with Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi, NFC, GPS, A-GPS, E-Compass, and G-Sensor technology. Unlike the S3, which was released in both a 4G-compatible and a cheaper non-4G version, Samsung have opted for just one device this time - the S IV is an LTE device, compatible across 2G, 3G and 4G networks.

The Samsung Galaxy S4 LTE comes in both black and white, and 16GB and 32GB and 64GB versions, and you've got the option to add to that storage capacity with a microSD slot. Unlike the lack of buttons on the new BlackBerry Z10, the S4 retains both a physical home button and touch buttons on screen, keeping it as easy to navigate as ever.

Previous Rumours

Previous renderings of the device depicted an more rectangular design, and there were rumours that Samsung would do away with pure plastic and incorporate some aluminium materials into the phones chassis, such as in the image below.

Overall, though, most of the speculation about what to expect from the S4 proved true. It's not so much a revolution, but a giant evolution from the world's dominant Android smartphone manufacturer.
